Leytonstone Film Club

February 2nd, 2010 No comments

A reminder about the sterling work the guys at the Leytonstone Film Club are doing. Given that there isn’t a single cinema in the whole of Waltham Forest, the film club is a much needed resource in our area. They tend to show the type of films that aren’t readily accessible in mainstream cinemas too, such as high quality foreign films or critically acclaimed films which may have only been given a limited release.

Screenings are held on the first Wednesday of every month. All screenings take place at Leytonstone Library, Church Lane, E11 1HG (just off Leytonstone Tube Station).

The film club will only survive if local people support it, so if you can, please go along.

Upcoming screenings:

3rd February, 2010 – Let The Right One In

Directed by Tomas Alfredson. Duration 1hr 54 mins, Rated 15.

Let The Right One In

Oskar is a 12-year-old outcast who is frequently picked on by his classmates. He dreams of getting his revenge, but he never stands up to the boys. With the arrival of his new next door neighbour, 12-year-old Eli, Oskar may finally have found a friend, ally, and first love. But Eli is no ordinary girl: she must keep her pale skin out of the sunlight, she can perform many inhuman physical feats, and she has a thirst for blood.

Save Our Streets

October 31st, 2009 No comments

There’s been quite a bit of discussion in recent months about street clutter (signage, advertisments etc.) and its negative impact on London streets. The guys over at The Wanstead Society had a link to a nice Guardian/English Heritage interactive tool which demonstrates some of these issues extremely well.

English Heritage also started the “Save Our Streets” campaign…

The towns and villages of England are being blighted by superfluous signs, haphazard paving and obstructed footways. As a result our streets are losing their local distinctiveness and character.

Save our Streets is a campaign to return England’s streets to places where people want to be, where all street users are accommodated and where communities thrive as a result.

A series of policy documents are available on their website which detail the problems caused by insensitive street additions and maintenance.

Community Council Funding

October 14th, 2009 No comments

As I sit on the committee of LARA, I attended the Leytonstone Community Council meeting on 12th October. We had applied for funding, which fortunately we got (hurrah!). There were many other benficiaries on the night, as each ward (Leytonstone, Cann Hall and Cathall) had a £10,000 pot to distribute amongst the various applicants, all voted for by the attendeed with a final decision made by the councillors. There was also a £5,000 pot for those applicants which didn’t fall into a particular ward. The majority of that went to the Leytonstone Festival (good news), though that initially looked like the Leytonstone Arts Trail would miss out. Fortunately Leytonstone Ward had a surplus, so that was given to them – great news as they did such a sterling job during this year’s festival.

All Change

E11 seems to have more than its fair share of apathy, so since the forum on this site was pretty much dormant (expect for a constant stream of attempted spam from our friends in Russia!) I’ve decided to ditch it. This goes hand-in-hand with a general re-focus/re-design, leaning towards a more regular blog/news site. I’m also currently working (well, trying to work) on www.leytonstone.org.uk which has more of an arts/editorial feel as well as aggregating streams from various other Leytonstone related sites. Hopefully the two will compliment each other rather than clash.

LARA – Leytonstone Area Residents Association

April 11th, 2009 No comments

Residents in the Upper Leytonstone Area now have their own Residents Association, LARA. There are already a number of Residents Associations covering various parts of Leytonstone (BARA in Bushwood, FARA around Ferndale Road and FORA in the “Forest” Ward), but one for the Leytonstone Ward has long been noticable by its absence.

The domain name www.leytonstoneresidents.org.uk has been registered and I’m pleased to say I’ll be helping out with the website. We’re still to switch over the domain name to the “new” site – but it can currently be viewed at leytonstoneresidents.wordpress.com.

The next meeting is at 7:00pm on 28th April at the St. John’s Ambulance building on Queen’s Road.
